The Essay Film
Jennings ‘A Diary for Timothy’ (1945) has motivated me to reflect on my own youth and how I perceived the world. This innocent view would be juxtaposed with adult realisation and experiences. Religion played a large part in my upbringing; I was baptized Catholic as a child and was schooled in this environment until was 11. Another factor that shaped my development was the media. Exploration into the way power can arise ‘from the way organised systems of knowledge fix things and give them a certain order’ (D.Hesmondhal 2006:117) could prove an interesting subject to document in an essay film. My perception of war as a child feels warped; toys and games nulled the notion of violence and death.
